What hardware should be my biggest consideration
Q: I’m going to build a CPU dedicated to Xeoma server. What should be my biggest consideration: processor, RAM, server or PC hardware?
A: That depends on the cameras and the features you will be using.
In a way, all components are important. But usually it comes down to CPU and network in the majority of installations.
For example, H264 streams mean lesser network and disk space load, yet bigger strain on processor – so the higher their resolution + bitrate combination is, the more powerful should processor on the server be. Yet there are ways to shift some of the load on to the ‘client’ side – but they won’t help if you will be using AI modules to which you’d want to feed high quality streams
In reverse, MJPEG streams are hard on network, disc space yet light on processor. See more about MJPEG compared to H264, here.
