Ways to fix stuttering audio in iPhone and Mac
Q: Do you have any suggestions how to solve the stuttering audio I have within Xeoma? On iOS it is stuttering a lot, on MacBook Pro it is stuttering less obvious, but still noticeable if the volume is turned up.
A: Here are some thing you should check:
1) Is there stuttering on the camera’s end? Login to the camera web interface and see if the stuttering persists there. If it does, the issue must lie on the camera or the network side, outside of Xeoma.
2) Network capacity. If you’re viewing Xeoma remotely, try to see if the issue persists in a different device, with a different network (for example, switch for mobile Internet to WiFi, or from WiFi to a wired connection), or try to see the streams in Xeoma on the same server computer. As an option, you can try to lower the stream bitrate in the camera web admin settings.
You can also select different streams in Xeoma’s ‘Universal Camera’ settings for either the preview stream, or the archive stream, or both – depending on which you get stuttering in.
3) CPU and network usage. Please check if the CPU or network usage is at capacity on the server and the client side. High CPU or network load can cause various issues including intermittent work.
4) If the stuttering only appears in archive recordings when you’re playing them back in Xeoma, please see if the actual recordings on the drive when you play them back from the drive.
Tip: check where those are located in the ‘Preview and Archive’ module settings.
If you hear stuttering sound in recordings that you playback outside of Xeoma, it indicates that the issue appears on the stage of doing the recording, not the stage of playing it back. Which means that it’s somewhere between the camera issues, the network bandwidth or the CPU load on the server machine.
You might want to try a new option in “Universal Camera” settings – a checkbox called “Use the server’s system time to generate timestamps for frames (use in case of archive mistiming issues)”, or a different stream for preview and/or archive in the “Universal Camera”.
5) Version gap. You are advised to check whether you are using the latest version of both the server and the client parts of Xeoma. Big gap in versions can make the client act in unusual ways.
You are advised to use a Xeoma version released after 2020 on your server.
